Spinal Mobility

Do you have a stiff back? Try these spinal mobility exercises!

Our Osteopath Michael Altis has been busy experimenting with a variety of movements and exercises that may help patients that are feeling stiff through their back.

Mobility relates to the amount of motion a joint can move through without being restricted by surrounding tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments).

Poor mobility can be caused by lack of movement or exercise, muscle imbalances, poor posture, and sedentary behaviour (prolonged time in the same position).

Often patients wake up feeling stiff in the morning. Not surprising seeing as though our body has been in a prolonged sleeping position for around 8 hours.

Performing mobility exercises and stretching is an easy approach aimed at improving range of motion of our joints and muscles, improving posture and alleviating pain and stiffness.

Try out these exercises (especially in the morning after a warm shower) and see how it works for you. Michael has organised a routine that should take you no more than 5 minutes!

  1. Cat camels x 10
  2. Lumbar twists x 10 each side
  3. Thread the needles x 10 each side
  4. Hip twists x 10 each side
  5. World’s greatest stretch x 10 each side
  6. Head circles x 10
