NORTH CARLTON OSTEOPATHY IS A MEMBER OF OSTEOPATHY AUSTRALIA

Frequently asked questions

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic form of manual therapy that focuses on improving the body’s mobility, alignment, and overall function. Osteopaths use hands-on techniques such as stretching, massage, and joint mobilisation to support the body’s natural healing.

Do I need a referral to see an osteopath?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with North Carlton Osteopathy. However, some patients may be referred by their GP, physiotherapist, or other healthcare providers.

What conditions can an osteopath help with?

Osteopathy can support a wide range of concerns, commonly including:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Sports and workplace injuries
  • Postural issues
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Pregnancy-related discomfort
  • Musculoskeletal pain in infants and children

Call us or check out our services page to see more details.

What should I expect for my first osteopathic session?

If it’s your first time with us, you’ll be booking an ‘initial appointment’ which allows for plenty of time to discuss and explore your concerns. Your osteopath will ask some questions about your current issue and medical history, and may ask you to try some simple movements or exercises to gain more information about what may be causing pain or limiting healthy movement. We can then often begin some manual treatments within the same session to help start alleviating pain, and will discuss and illustrate next steps and exercises to help continue your recovery. If required, we can help refer you for any scans or extra tests required to gain more information. We will discuss your treatment plan in detail, and you’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions with our friendly, experienced team.

Feel free to call us or book online and we’ll take it from there!

How many osteo sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your condition and goals. Some patients feel relief after one or two sessions or are confident in undertaking simple adjustments and exercises at home, while others benefit from a structured treatment plan that requires more guided follow-ups and adjustments. Your osteopath will discuss the best approach during your initial consultation.

Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?

Yes, osteopathy is safe and often recommended during pregnancy. Gentle treatment can help ease lower back pain, pelvic discomfort, and postural changes that occur before and after childbirth.

Do you treat babies and children?

Yes. Growing pains and other issues common in children can reduce comfort or confidence with important exercises. Our osteopaths provide safe, gentle care for infants and children to help with growth, development, and musculoskeletal concerns to help them get back fun play and activity.

Can osteopathy help with chronic pain?

Yes. Osteopathy can play a valuable role in long-term pain management by improving mobility, reducing muscle tension, and supporting lifestyle strategies for better quality of life.

Is osteopathy covered by private health insurance?

Yes, and we are able to help process this at our reception desk. We do recommend checking with your private health fund to see the level of rebate and cover available for osteopathic treatment.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Comfortable clothing that allows free movement is recommended. You may be asked to move or stretch during your session.
