The role of Osteopathy in the treatment of Asthma

Current perspectives indicate an increasing, widespread enthusiasm among the public for alternatives to conventional medicines. This is accompanied by rising interest amongst clinicians, especially medical practitioners.  Osteopathic treatment looks into the importance of the musculoskeletal system in asthma management and, more importantly, the muscles used when breathing. Osteopaths emphasize the importance of keeping the thorax, rib cage and diaphragm free of problems, especially in those with immune system difficulties.

Physical examination of an asthmatic patient reveals that most sufferers present with a unique pattern of physical findings. However, the key features dealt with by Osteopaths are the changes seen in the muscles, primarily those of the chest and upper back which are often very tense. Manual treatment is used in these instances to increase the function of those muscles, thus helping breathing.

When sought in conjunction with current medical treatment, Osteopathy is useful in the control of asthma and it’s symptoms. If you have any further questions on this subject please speak with your Osteopath.
